CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Authorities say one of three deputy U.S. marshals shot while attempting to serve a warrant in north-central West Virginia has died. The suspect also was killed in the shootout.

U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Dave Oney in Washington, D.C., said the shooting occurred at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday as deputy U.S. marshals approach a residence in Elkins. He didn’t have details but confirmed the deputy marshal died and that the suspect was fatally shot at the residence where two other deputy U.S. marshals also were wounded.

All three deputy marshals were taken to a hospital by helicopter. Oney said he didn’t immediately know where the deputy marshal died. He didn’t release the names of the deputies or the suspect.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John Kaull in Clarksburg told The Associated Press a search warrant had been issued for the residence of Charles Smith, who was wanted on a 2006 bench warrant on federal drug and related charges.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Smith was involved in the shooting.

Sgt. Michael Baylous, a State Police spokesman, said troopers were at the residence helping the marshals execute the warrant.

NEW YORK Feb. 16, 2011

A Somali pirate asked for forgiveness from his victims and from the U.S. government in a New York courtroom today, but instead received nearly 34 years in prison.

Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse pled guilty last year to being part of an armed crew that stormed the Maersk Alabama in the Indian Ocean in April 2009 and took its captain, Richard Phillips, hostage.

At his sentencing Wednesday morning, Muse, clad in a green shirt and khaki slacks, apologized at length for his career as a pirate. “I ask for forgiveness from all the people I harmed including the U.S. government,” said Muse.

Prior to announcing the sentence, Judge Preska read letters from members of the crew and their families about how the hijacking had affected them. According to the letters, two marriages ended in divorce and some crewmembers suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder and can no longer work. Preska teared up and removed her glasses and then gave Muse 33 years and nine months, citing the need for deterrence.

“For five days that must have seemed like an eternity to this victims, Abduwali Abukhadir Muse terrorized the crew of the Maersk Alabama,” said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in a statement after the sentencing. “Now he will pay for those five days and the events leading up to them.”

Jennifer Lopez looked gorgeous at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, but she had to pay a price for her look. Radar reports that Lopez stabbed herself in the leg with one of the spikes adorning her Christian Louboutin heels while she got ready in her dressing room just before she had to go onstage during the broadcast.

A source tells Radar “Her stylist was freaking out because Jennifer accidentally punctured herself with one of the many spikes on her shoes. It was a small puncture, but the blood wouldn’t stop and J-Lo still had to present an award.” Lopez’ injury was bad enough that paramedics were called to treat the wound and bandage it so she could fulfill her duties as presenter. The injury didn’t seem to impair her while she was onstage, fortunately, and she looked so stunning that no one seemed to notice her Band-Aid.
