Mean Girls was released nearly 10 years ago, catapulting its star Lindsay Lohan to teen icon status. Barely 18 at the time, Lohan became a fixture on the Hollywood scene after the film’s release, hanging out with It Girls like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, with mom Dina by her side. The attention bestowed upon her and her own group of Plastics soon shed light on a new batch of modern celebrities: the reality star. Reality television became a legitimate form of entertainment in the 2000s, spawning many successful personalities like Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, and legitimizing the inexplicable draw of heiresses with sex tapes.

As we continue out examination of fame in the pre-social media era, it’s time to take a trip down memory lane — back to when Wilmer Valderrama was romancing a rotating cast of teen starlets and Britney Spears was considered unpredictable simply because of her tendency to get married. Usher was confessing his sins through song and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were finally tapping into the millions of dollars they made before puberty. Mel Gibson‘s The Passion of the Christ and Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s election win angered many, but all people really wanted to complain about was Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake‘s infamous wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl.

In honor of Throwback Thursday, we’re reliving the moments that ruled the year 2004. Remember the awkwardness of Ashlee Simpson‘s Saturday Night Live faux pas and recall Chad Michael Murray‘s heartthrob status on all of your favorite WB/CW soaps, in the gallery above.

And if that’s not enough for your nostalgia-loving soul, relive the year 2004 with this vintage look at Alicia Keys discussing the name of her sophomore album. (Yes, this was long before “Empire State of Mind.”)

‘The Other Woman’ LA Premiere **USA, Australia, New Zealand ONLY**

Leslie Mann, her husband Judd Apatow and their daughters Maude, 16, and Iris, 12, attended the premiere of The Other Woman at the Regency Village Theatre in Los Angeles, Calif. on Monday (April 21).

In the film Mann plays plays a vengeful wife who is cheated on. In a recent interview the actress talks about motherhood dictating her career choices.

She says, “There’s a sacrifice being made. I’m not willing to spend too much time away from my kids so I usually don’t work that much. Judd makes way more money than me. Besides, I’d rather be home.

“I just get to that moment where everything drives me crazy; I don’t want to live in this house anymore; I don’t want to live in this city; I want to tear everything up and move all the furniture. That’s when I know I need to find myself a creative outlet outside of the house.”

Once a month she gets together with her girlfriends.

Mann shares, “Once a month I get together with my girlfriends and we usually check into a hotel or go to someone else’s house. We can talk for 15 hours and it just flies by. There’s usually a lot of wine and stuff. We talk a lot about our husbands. Private stuff. When you have little kids, you lose friends because you’re so busy but, as they get older you realise how important it is to have your girlfriends around.”

She also talks about Maude stating, “My eldest daughter is 16 and she’s so crazy and hormonal right now, I feel bad for her, but she’s also awesome and super smart. She’s a writer too, like her dad. She tells me when I look really bad and to change my clothes. She thinks she’s probably way smarter than me and she probably is smarter than me. Which is kind of annoying.”
