2012 was a tough year for Taylor Kitsch, headlining big movies that bombed spectacularly at the box office. (Don’t remember John Carter? That’s okay, no one else does either.) But the extraordinarily handsome actor, who sucked fans in with his angsty portrayal of Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights, is back on the big screen in a movie you’ve probably never heard of.

The Grand Seduction is a Canadian comedy that tells the tale of a small Newfoundland town, whose residents try to charm a big city doctor  who relocates to the neighborhood. It’s filled with Canadian specifics but “you can relate if you’re American,” Kitsch told us at the premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. “That doesn’t matter.”

The film was practically a vacation compared to the on-set schedule he’s used to. “It was fun,” he said. “It definitely is a different pace. Usually I am beyond exhausted. Like [for] John Carter, you’re on every single day. I was spoiled on this movie.Three or four day weeks – it was nothing.”

As for being back in his home country, the Canadian actor said: “It is a homecoming for me. It’s just an insane amoutn of support. I live in Austin, Texas, so I’m rarely here. I gotta get here more.”

The movie is generating positive reviews and was buzzed about at TIFF – but can it cross over and become a hit here in the States? Maybe the big break Kitsch needs in his career will be his smallest film thus far.
